4.0 Important Information about the Club KidSoft INIT
5.0 Using Club KidSoft in your CD Player
6.0 End User License Agreement for Club KidSoft CD-ROM
1.0 SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
1.1 System Software:
Club KidSoft requires System 7.0 or later, and a color-capable Macintosh.
1.2 Screen Resolution:
Club KidSoft requires a minimum setting of 640 x 480 x 8 bit (256 color) screen resolution (13" color monitor). If you have a 16- or 24-bit color card, you may wish to run in 8-bit color mode for better performance, but this is not required.
1.3 CD-ROM Drive:
We highly recommend using a double speed CD-ROM drive. The application will run using a single speed drive, but load times and screen changes will be slower.
If you receive an error message "101" while starting the program, the following steps may alleviate the problem:
If your Control Panels folder contains an AppleCD Speed Switch Control Panel, try changing the speed setting to standard speed and restarting the computer.
Try restarting your machine.
1.4 Memory:
Club KidSoft uses approximately 1700K of RAM to run.
NOTE: On Macintoshes with only 4 MB of RAM, your computer may not have enough memory left over after starting Club KidSoft to launch some of the demos from within the Club KidSoft program. You can make more memory available by removing some of your INITs, but this still may not make enough RAM available. However, you may still launch any of the demos from the Finder. They are located in a folder called "DEMOS", on the Club KidSoft CD-ROM. Just open up the appropriate folder and double click on the demo program.
2.0 INSTALLATION NOTES
No special installation is required, but you may wish to copy the Club KidSoft application to your hard drive for better performance. The application will take up approximately 3 megabytes of hard disk space, so do this only if you have the room to spare. Please note that the Club KidSoft CD-ROM must still be in your CD-ROM drive for the application to work properly.
Club KidSoft does need QuickTime to run properly. If you don't currently have QuickTime, you should install the QuickTime Extension which you can find at the top level of the Club KidSoft CD-ROM. Just drag this icon on top of your system folder and reboot your Macintosh.
2.1 LAUNCHING CLUB KIDSOFT
After you have inserted your Club KidSoft CD-ROM, double-click on the Club KidSoft CD-ROM drive icon. Double click on the Club KidSoft application. The first time you run Club KidSoft, you will be prompted to enter your Customer Key and your Medie Code. The Customer key can be found on a sticker on the caddy that the CD came in. It's a 14 digit code, simply type it into the field. The Media Code is a 9 digit number also located on the CD Caddy sticker. Type this into the bottom field, and click the Register button. Enjoy!
3.0 INSIDE CLUB KIDSOFT
Use your mouse to navigate around the program. Explore the screen by clicking on different objects with your mouse. You may be surprised by what happens!
The lower left hand side of all screens will have a button to let you go backwards to the previous screen. To exit, back up to the first screen, and click on the stop sign.
3.1 EXITING FROM THE DEMOS
Before each demo is launched, a dialog box will appear with specific notes for that demo, but in most cases pressing the Command and Q keys at the same time will exit a demo.
3.2 SHOPPING IN THE CLUB KIDSOFT CD-ROM
The Catalog is organized so that you can see all the titles of the catalog in different ways very easily. When you first enter the screen you will be viewing the entire catalog. To search the catalog by Title, Age, Subject, or Category, click the appropriate button on the left side of the screen. This will cause another set of buttons to appear below the box images. Now click the appropriate search criteria.
You can also look at the catalog using the Power Shopping mode. When you select this button on the left side of the screen, all of the criteria buttons below the box images become visible. You can select one button from each row to further narrow your search parameters. If you selected a button and change your mind, simply click on it again and it will become deselected. When you have selected the appropriate buttons, click the Search button in the lower right corner of the screen. The results will be displayed in the box images.
Clicking on a box will cause the box to enlarge and give you a description of the program. In this screen you may choose to try out the program if the demo button is enabled, learn about hardware requirements, or find out if the program is part of a Club Special. If you move your mouse over the icons at the bottom of the screen you can see what special features the program has to offer.
If the product you are looking at is available to buy right off the CD, there will be a Purchase button in the lower right corner of the screen. Clicking this button will take you to the Purcashing screen. You do not actually purchase the software until you are on the phone with a KidSoft operator and exchanging purchasing information. Feel free to explore the screens; in all cases you can return to the catalog by using the back-up arrows.
3.2.1 PURCHASING FROM THE CLUB KIDSOFT CD-ROM
The Purchasing screen allows you to view all the ClubCode products available on the CD-ROM, as well as the products you have previously purchased. From the ClubCode Products list select the product you wish to purchase by clicking on the name of that product with the mouse. A picture of that product will appear along with the product number, title, and ClubCode price. The Unlock code field and Unlock button will also appear. You will notice a series of letters above the product list. This is your ClubCode password. You will need to give this password to the KidSoft product specialist to process your order and unlock the software.
When you are ready to order, call KidSoft at 800-354-6150 and identify the product you wish to purchase.
A product specialist will process your order, then give you a 14 character unlock code. Once you type the unlock code into the box on your screen, the software will be available for downloading. This code will only work with your CD-ROM on your computer. The software, which has been unlocked, now resides on the disc ready for installation. Once a product has been successfully unlocked, you will see the Install dialog box.
3.3 INSTALLING, AND RE-INSTALLING SOFTWARE
After you unlock a program, a volume titled "ClubCode" will appear on your desktop. This volume will appear any time you insert your Club KidSoft CD-ROM. ╥ClubCode" contains all the software you have unlocked, each title in its own folder. Open up the folder of the title you wish to install, and double-click the installer you find within. The installer will walk you through the steps you then need to take.
Once you have unlocked a software program, the software remains unlocked on the disc, but may be used only on the computer from which you made the software purchase.
4.0 IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THE CLUB KIDSOFT INIT
When you have registered your software, Club KidSoft will install an extension called "~Clubcode Volume 2 Issue 3" in your Extensions folder within your System folder on your hard drive. The "~Clubcode Volume 2 Issue 3" extension contains information which tells the computer what your registration code is, and what software titles you have unlocked. Do not throw this extension away, as if you do the computer will forget which software titles you have purchased, as you will have to call KidSoft to get new unlock codes for the software you have already purchased.
5.0 USING CLUB KIDSOFT IN YOUR CD PLAYER
You may play this CD-ROM on your home audio CD player. Just put the disc in the CD player, play Track 2, and enjoy the music. DO NOT PLAY TRACK 1 - it is a data track only.
